Part of my daily routine is to do some personal development, that includes either or a combination of things such as reading, podcasts, audio books, online courses and more just to name a few.  This morning during my online studies this quote was dropped and hit me like an atomic bomb.  To be a successful entrepreneur, you have to work knowing, that someone else is out there working 24 hours a day with one goal, to take your business away. – Mark Cuban.

It really does truly come down to this.  As a business owner, you need to be constantly trying to better yourself and your business, tightening up your processes and make sure that your customer service is the best in the industry period.  You have to be willing to do what it takes.  In today’s day and age, we have some of the smartest shoppers who have access to worldwide information at the tip of their fingers accessible from just about anywhere.  If you’re not doing what it takes, I promise you someone else out there is and that can be a very costly proposition for you later down the road.  Have some pride, lose some of that greed and take little steps every day towards improving, you will feel better about it and profit more in the long run.

This Cost Efficient Upgrade may Speed Up Your Computer Hardware!![dt_divider style=”thin” /]

I recently made the switch to a MacBook Pro as my primary working tool after playing around on it for a few months loving the experience.  It made wonder why things were running so much smoother.  For argument sake, Apple has the advantage of being much better optimized as they have a limited amount of hardware available.  I don’t personally have a clear winner, as I use both.  At the time of writing in my personal office I use both a MacBook Pro and a laptop running Windows 10.  What discouraged me from Windows after running the MacBook for a while was how much less responsive it was, and it felt overall slower.  I am pleased to say that one upgrade has narrowed the gap between the two in my case.

Interesting Tech Tip: Upgrading to an SSD (Solid-State Drive) drive on my Toshiba laptop (Samsung ssd 850 pro) has really diminished the gap in speed between my MacBook Pro and it. If you have a slower machine that is not ancient, give it a second life with a SSD hard drive. The upgrade is cheaper than purchasing a new machine. Other benefits besides massive speed increase, includes more reliability, safer transportation, and better battery life.

Today I read an article today from Jeffrey Gitomer which reminded of a quote I read a long while ago from one of Jeff’s books.  This article was from his weekly Sales Caffeine email and highly recommend it.  Jeffrey Gitomer has a certain spark to his personality that I just love when reading his materials.  In fact I believe this quote is one of his famous sayings.

I often get asked about closing techniques or how to be a better seller, and frankly I share the same thought process as Jeffrey, stop trying to sell or to be a better “salesman”.  You are far better to learn understand why people buy!  Why people buy your products or services!  Why do you buy products?  Why would you buy your product or service?  Think about it!  Think about the last thing you bought that you went out of your way to get it, you just couldn’t wait to buy it!  In fact nothing could have stopped from getting it!

As a business owner, I truly believe a great strategy in increasing your overall sales is to ask questions.  Having the right questions can be more powerful for you then having the right answers.   When you see an old customer, have you ever thought about asking them why they bought your product or service?  I bet you would be surprised at the reasons you would discover.  I also bet the stories you would get from your customers would make great stories to share with your future prospects.

Just thought I would share this little tidbit with you today.

Have you ever heard of Ted Talks… or Simon Sinek, author of the book “Start with Why”??   If not, I really encourage anyone to watch the video below.  I enjoy watching many of the different available Ted Talks presentation.  However this one particular video really resonated with me and got me thinking about how I communicate or share my ideas with others.  I believe every business owner, sales person or just anyone in general should allow themselves 20 minutes to go watch, listen and absorb what Simon talks about in this presentation.  Too often are we heavily focussed on the wrong thing, this could simply be the reason why you aren’t getting the results you are after.

If we look at this quote from Simon Sinek – “People don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it” in my opinion, it really speaks to connecting with people at a much deeper level than simple impulse buying.  If you can get someone to believe in your vision, believe in your cause, I believe you will have gained a life long customer.



Why do you do what you do?  Why did you go in business in the first place?   Why should anyone care?  What gets you up in the morning and motivates you to open your doors every day to customers?  Taking time to reflect on this and reorganise your priorities could potentially pay off in dividends.  Connecting to the deeper reason you’re in business helps renew your sense of purpose.

When in discovery phase with my clients, I make it a point to spend time of this very crucial element as I believe it is a very important piece of the story and journey of your business, there can be some fantastic gems that can serve as a great purpose in your marketing and branding strategy upon discovering or rediscovering your why.  At a minimum I know you feel more inspired.

If you’ve never read any of Seth Godin’s material, you need too!  I love his take on Marketing.  This guy says it like it is, and honestly it’s great and I like it.  This particular quote from Seth literally changed the way I sold things from that point on.  “Don’t find customers for your products, find products for your customers”. – Seth Godin.  I went from pitching features and benefits to fact finding and solving problems for customers.  I quickly realized after changing my ways that solving problems for customer vs assuming their needs exponentially increased consumer satisfaction.  Yes there was a time I where I was not as bright as I am today.

I truly believe you are doing a dis-service to your customers if you are not discovering their needs prior to proposing a product or solution.  From cold calling, emails or face to face sales, do yourself a favor spend some time and think about fact finding questions related to your product that you can ask your customers in order to better serve them.  You will not only benefit from an increase in sales and customer satisfaction, but you will also learn how to improve your products and or services based on the feedback you will receive.

Here is a new digital series for Your Go To Guy called “Favourite Quotes”. People who know me, know that I absolutely love quotes. Although a quote may not solve any particular business situation they do serve me well for inspiration and consultations.  Feel free to browse this growing library of quotes and my thoughts as why I love the particular quote.  Should you feel inspired to share your favourite quote with me, I would love to hear from you and why!

This quote by Theodore Roosevelt – Believe you can and you’re halfway there… I truly feel this quote serves a lot of meaning. Any business owner that I met that does not believe… in their product, in their success, in their journey for the most part have very little success. Tony Robbins explains that Belief influences potential which influences the actions you take which directly affects your results, and your results will affect your belief. This could go positively or negatively, and keeps circling over and over.  Think about it!

Imagine meeting a surgeon that didn’t believe they could perform a surgery successfully, how would you feel?  I would imagine not very confident in the surgeons abilities.  I believe that your beliefs translate in your communications with everyone around you, including your customers.  One of the best ways to get refocused is to go back to basics, go back to the beginning and try and remember “why” you started this in the first place. There are numerous advantages to knowing why you do you what you do.  If you have never heard of the Golden Circle by Simon Sinek, I encourage you to watch the Ted Talks presentation called Start with why. When I do coaching / consulting, knowing and understanding your belief and your “why” is among the first few things I need to know in order to help you tell your story and help your business strive.

Please read this important message – IT’S NOT A SALES OFFER, THERE IS NOTHING TO BUY!

There is a major shift coming online and every business with a website should be aware of the deadline:

Recently, Google has made an unprecedented move in announcing major changes in their search ranking of websites ahead of time. The change is that they’re going to give preferential treatment to websites designed to work properly on mobile devices.

The change can have profound impact on your website’s search ranking.

but the relevant part is the following:

“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

What it practically means is that websites non-compliant with Google’s mobile-friendly criteria will have their rank significantly degraded.

If your company’s website PLACE DOMAIN NAME BELOW! is already mobile-friendly, congratulations! You’ll be among the April 21st winners. Unfortunately, if you’ve received this message, it is probably not the case.
Just understand – it’s not whether you think your site is mobile-friendly enough. It’s what Google thinks. If you’re getting this message, Google most likely thinks it is not.

To be sure about how your website’s mobile-friendliness measures up to Google’s expectations, you can check it out at Google’s test site

(just copy and paste your website’s address PLACE DOMAIN NAME BELOW! into the URL column )

If your site is not compliant, make sure your IT guys make it so by the deadline if you want to retain your current ranking. If you miss the deadline, you might need to spend some money and wait some time just to get back to wherever you are right now.


If your IT guys don’t know how to get your site mobile compliant (or you don’t have any IT guys), we might be able to help – but time is getting really short, so no promises about meeting the deadline.

Hey everyone, Marcel here with a new Marketing TIPS article.   I came across some really cool little marketing gimmicky things that I thought I would share.  The entire purpose of this article is to encourage you to get creative with what you do.   Thinking outside the box and doing things different then everyone else can often have a long lasting appeal.  Creative Marketing is awesome, and always gets people talking and taking action!

Creative Example In My Town.

Although you hear about Windsor Ontario having a tough go with the economy and what now, I do feel that it has inspired and encouraged new entrepreneurs to try new things.  One creative marketing example that comes to mind is this newer place called On The Green.  It was started by 2 guys if my memory serves me right and these guys GET IT!   They have created a super cool Indoor Golf experience.  I remember one of the many great things they did was offer up a BEER Passport, they offered a number of beers from around the world and gave you this passport where they would check off the different beers you had while you toured the world with beer.  It was a great move, as you get encouraged not only to try new beers, but it also encouraged you to buy more beer.  I know every time I bring people there, it never fails!


Since opening they have expanded and built one of the coolest outdoor mini-put courses I have yet to see with waterfalls, pirate ships etc.. and built a really decked out Beach Volley Ball Court with a outdoor bar and more.   With these additions, they now have an even better business that appeals to all sorts of different audiences.

Re-Inventing The Business Card!

The example above is all around great marketing and great entrepreneurship.  You too can also find ways to do creative things in your business.  I can remember back in College while studying marketing, I got the opportunity to shadow a business called Peak Promotional Products, I was blown away by all the cool stuff you could get made with your logo on it!   I immediately saw how there are really no limits to what you can do!

Hey everyone, Marcel here with the latest Marketing TIPS article.   This weeks article speaks about a great tool that should be a part of your Marketing Plan.  The S.W.O.T analysis.  What is it?  How can it be used to help your business?


A SWOT Analysis is a great way to evaluate your business at any given time and help put a new game plan together to bring you and your business to the next level.  Not only can this be used for your business, you can also do a SWOT Analysis on yourself!

What Is a S.W.O.T. Analysis??


A swot analysis is a tool that can be part of a Marketing plan or used individually to help discover new opportunities or manage and eliminate threats.  It is a useful technique / tool to help you better understand your strengths and weaknesses at any given time.


It is made up of four parts, Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunity and Threats.


A bit of Marketing Trivia, the SWOT analysis based on my research was originated by Albert S Humphrey in the 60’s, and is as useful now as it was then, maybe even more!

Breaking it down! Bring in your own SWOT Team!


Time to get your hands dirty, and the gears turning, time to do your own SWOT analysis.  Here are some great questions to get you well on your way.  It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just grab a few sheets of paper and get to work!



  • List all the advantages that your business may have?
  • Is there anything that you do better than your competition?
  • What do your customers see as your strengths?
  • Are there any exclusive or low-cost resources at your disposal that your competition can’t easily get?
  • What is your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)??  We have an article all about that here.
  • What is causing you to Win Sales?

I always recommend that you put yourself in your customers shoes and in your own when answering these questions.  Consider also that what you have in common with your competitors is not a strength, it is a necessity!



  • What can you and your business improve on?
  • What would your customers perceive or see as a weakness?
  • What are things you should be avoiding?
  • What is causing you to lose sales?

Be truthful and realistic with your weaknesses, this is not a failure by any means, it is an opportunity to fix it and get better!



  • Are there any new trends in your industry? Name them.
  • Are there any opportunities that you haven’t yet taken advantage of?  Name them.

Consider the following when answering questions around opportunities.  Changes in technology, lifestyle changes, social patterns, new or changed government policies, local events etc…  You could also review your strengths and weaknesses for any under utilized or missed opportunities.




  • What is your competition doing that you’re not?
  • Are there any changes in quality or expectations around your products / services?
  • What obstacles are you / should be battling?
  • Are technology changes, economic changes or any other uncontrollable factors affecting your business? Which ones and why…
  • Are you facing any financial (debt or cash-flow) problems?
  • Are any of your weaknesses jeopardizing your business?


By doing a SWOT analysis regularly, (monthly / quarterly / yearly) you’re putting yourself in a position of always being on top of your game.  You will have a great understanding of where your business stands, and you will have all the resources and information required to put a great action plan together to get you moving in the right direction.
